The Personal is Political but the Collective is Powerful
We are happy to present the latest expression of Io’s commitment to supporting and strengthening feminist movements. The Tagpuan sa Bahay ni Io co-working space aims to provide a comfortable and safe physical venue and harness the evocative and metaphoric possibilities of the term “tagpuan” to bring people together to work and engage each other in our newly renovated Filipiniana building.
In launching this new space we are also organizing a forum for young women to start a conversation around “The Personal is Political but the Collective is Powerful” on December 11, 2019, 2-30- 6:00 pm at the Bahay ni Io, #3 Marunong St., Central, Quezon City.
We all have our own origin stories as to what woke us up to becoming a feminist. Within ourselves, we strive towards a greater understanding of what it means to live as one. But what is the ultimate goal of this awakened consciousness? Is being feminist something that is expressed through our personal choices in the private sphere of our lives? Or does our feminism connect us to something that is larger than ourselves? How does the personal intersect to the collective? What is the feminist frame that you or your collective uses to deconstruct/redress patriarchy and its roots in current day socio-political, economic and cultural realities?
We are hoping for an emergent sort of conversation circle – where we are able to have a deep and honest engagement with each other’s ideas, share deeply both insights and confusions on things that we are wildly passionate about at the moment – and let’s see where that leads us…
Guest speakers are Shebana Alqaseer, co-organizer of Bantay Bastos; Alice Sarmiento, co-founder of Grrrl Gang Manila and Dawn Macahilo, Movement Building Adviser for Asia for She Decides.
